Yoga Positions, Exercises, Breathing And Yoga Classes

In the hustle and bustle of present day society, the search for solace can seem futile. For many, finding inner peace and connectedness proves difficult with life's daily demands and stresses. A feasible solution does not have to result in moving to a remote, desolate island and living off the fruits of the land in solitude. Yoga originated in India and is a constant presence in their culture today. Different poses, or asanas, are used for religious and spiritual practices in hopes of reaching enlightenment and to unite mind and body. These poses in combination with controlled breathing, or pranayama, act as a form of meditation. Directly associated with this mindset is the idea that the centering achieved through yoga surpasses just the practice itself. The controlled breathing helps to remove bodily toxins, and an almost immediate sense of well-being is felt after commencement of the exercises. Yoga can alleviate depression, lower blood pressure and increase stamina. These exercises are also used for physical therapy, as it promotes the stretching of muscles and ligaments.

For novices, the first two weeks are said to be the worst. Muscles will likely be tight and sore due to the unfamiliar and rather extensive movements used in yoga positions. The body may be somewhat bloated as toxins are released from the blood stream. However, after this initial cleansing, the benefits abound.

Yoga positions range from the simplistic bending and twisting to the more complicated, intricate maneuvers. The best advice to heed is to take it slow. It takes time to advance, and beginners should go at their own pace and follow their bodies' limitations. There are over 200 positions spanning the six types of yoga, and these cannot all be expected to be completed successfully, at least at first.

With hatha yoga, the most commonly practiced form, the poses resemble things found in nature. Some examples of these poses are sun salutation, locust, eagle and tree. Hatha exercises focus on determined mental focus and breathing through the nose. Hatha classes are abundant almost everywhere. Classes are offered through colleges, gyms, private practitioners and organizations such as the YMCA. Yoga classes are generally inexpensive, if anything a minimal fee is charged.

There are a few tips to help those learning the basics of yoga. The best results are yielded when the regimen is practiced daily. Sessions can last anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours, depending on the comfort and experience level of the individual. Yoga should be performed on an empty stomach, and wearing loose fitting clothing is a must. Yoga is best practiced in the early morning or evening, in a well-ventilated and lit atmosphere. In essence, to promote a tranquil and energized state of mind, all environmental aspects should reflect the same qualities.

Yoga acts as not only an escape from the tension-fueled world of today, but also as an atypical fitness regime. The benefits of the discipline apply to all aspects of life, encouraging soundness of mind and strength of the physical body. The serenity and inner peace found through yoga are sure to enlighten any non-believer.
