Bikram Choudhury, the yogi who developed this practice 30 years ago, copyrighted the specific sequence of 26 postures that correlate with this school of yoga. Choudhury differentiated Bikram yoga from others by practicing in a room with a temperature with at least 105 degrees. The classes are typically 90 minutes long, incorporating the 26 sequenced poses with two different breathing techniques. The 80-20 breathing exercise involves inhaling deeply while entering certain postures, then exhaling in 20% intervals throughout their durations. The other breathing technique is simply inhaling deeply before poses, then exhaling completely once in the positions. These particular facets of Bikram yoga help to differentiate the practice from other schools of yoga.
The more Bikram yoga is practiced, the more abundant the benefits. This form of yoga tones and strengthens all the muscles of the body and is great for cardiovascular and respiratory health. Balance is improved, while stress is reduced. The ability to concentrate and focus is honed through Bikram yoga, and eventually all the body's systems will become balanced.
